Consequences of Multiple DUIs in Colorado
The penalties for subsequent DUI charges are as follows:
- Second DUI offense (meaning one previous DWAI or DUI) is punishable by 10 days to one year in jail, 48 to 120 hours of community service, and fines ranging from $600 to $1,500.
- Third DUI offense (meaning two previous DWAI or DUI) is punishable by 60 days to one year in jail, 48 to 120 hours of community service, and fines ranging from $600 to $1,500.
- Fourth or subsequent DUI offense is charged as a Class 4 felony, punishable by two to six years in state prison, three years of mandatory parole, and 48 to 120 hours of community service.
Multiple DUI convictions in Colorado carry serious consequences for your driving privileges beyond legal penalties. Your first DUI results in a 9-month license revocation and adds 12 points to your driving record. With a second offense, whether it's a DUI or DWAI, your license will be revoked for 12 months, with DWAI convictions adding 8 points and DUI convictions adding 12 points to your record.
The penalties become even more severe with a third offense, as your license will be revoked for 24 months, and you'll again face either 8 points for a DWAI or 12 points for a DUI. These point accumulations can make it extremely difficult to reinstate your license, affect your insurance rates, and potentially lead to longer suspension periods.
